Wes Steering, don’t lie to justify transphobic UK Labour Government policy

Wes Streeting your recent article pinkwashing the harm the UK government causes trans youth was an unseemly farce. Except that transphobic oppression on TERF Island is just is not funny.

Your recent piece in Pink News was an unseemly farce. Except that it’s just not funny.

Wes Steering,

In your recent piece in PinkNews you claimed you to be “sorry for the fear and anxiety” that your government’s decisions  are causing trans and non-binary British persons.

Wes Steering shouldn’t lie to protect his party.

You are not responding to fear. You are creating it and you know it. If you really were sorry about the impact of the injustice you support you would take meaningful action, wouldn’t you? So what have you actually done to stop this harm?

You have taken a temporary groundless restriction and made it indefinite, cutting off access to puberty blockers for trans youth across both the NHS and private care.
At the same time, the so-called research pathway you point to has been paused, tightening access further in practice.

So when you say this is about “evidence” and “safety,” what you are actually delivering is denial of care with no viable alternative.

You repeat the line that “children’s healthcare must be led by evidence.”
Fine. Then apply it consistently.

What you are doing in the UK is not evidence-based medicine. It is politics.

Major medical bodies outside the UK continue to support gender-affirming care, and even within the UK, the evidence base is contested, not absent.
Yet you have chosen a policy outcome first and wrapped it in wobbly selective uncertainty.

You even frame this as protecting “vulnerable children.”
But the policy you are defending does something very specific:

  • It removes time-sensitive care during puberty
  • It forces delay through irreversible physical development
  • It pushes families toward unregulated or overseas options
  • It leaves young people waiting in a system already failing them

You are not neutral here. You are making an active intervention in the lives of trans youth.

And let’s talk about your language.

You say you are uncomfortable with treatment that “stops a natural part of development.”
That framing is not clinical. It is ideological.

Because for trans youth, the “natural development” you are defending is precisely the harm they are seeking to avoid.

You are privileging one outcome as default and calling it neutral.

It is not.

You have also chosen who you listen to.
You have engaged with groups hostile to transition, while trans youth themselves have struggled to even get a meeting with you.

That is not balance. That is exclusion. And it is deliberate.

So when you say you are sorry, understand this:

Apology without reversal falls short of accountability.
Regret without change is not leadership.

You are not simply inheriting a flawed system.
You are entrenching it.

And the result is predictable.

In the UK since your government took power, Trans people are now:

  • Less protected in law, after the narrowing of Equality Act interpretation
  • More restricted in healthcare access, with blockers banned and hormones paused
  • More exposed to institutional exclusion, as regulators enforce those changes

That is what your tenure has produced. This is your legacy.

You may call it caution.
You may call it evidence.

But from where I stand, this is a government withdrawing care from a minority group and calling it safety.

You can do better than this. And you’ll have to sooner or later.

But right now, you are choosing not to. This might be why under your government Trans British subjects are fleeing, some even seeking shelter and asylum from persecution in Canada. All this because of your government’s policy and UK Labour’s hypocrisy.

Shame on you. May the world be kinder to you than you are to trans youth.
